The UK’s leading end of life charity, Marie Curie, is launching a new companion service to provide free emotional and practical support for people in care homes in East Surrey.

Set to launch later this year, the charity is looking for local volunteers to give a few hours a week to help deliver the service across selected care homes in Caterham, Reigate and Merstham with the hope to expand across the area soon. The new volunteer-led service is designed to support those at the end of life and those close to them with things such as advance care planning conversations where residents are encouraged to think about how they would like to live their life, up to the end, and write down their decisions. Zabian Fifield, Volunteer Service Coordinator in the South East, spoke about the service: “We’re looking for volunteers over 18 with great listening skills. We’ll give you full training to make sure you feel confident facilitating important conversations around people’s wishes at the end of life. “Our team of specially trained Marie Curie companion volunteers will help put people’s minds at ease throughout these conversations so that they can have the death they want, in a place of their choosing and with the right support. “Volunteers tell us how much satisfaction they get from giving even a small amount of time but helping make an enormous difference in their local community. With the continued support from the people of East Surrey we can help more people have the best possible end of life, wherever they are and whatever their illness.” If you’re interested in becoming a Maire Curie companion, please email [email protected] or visit Mariecurie.org.uk/volunteering Marie Curie offers practical and emotional support on everything from symptom management and day to day care to financial information and bereavement.
