The United Kingdom is on the brink of a unique political phenomenon as AI Steve, a chatbot, vies for a seat in Parliament. This heralds a significant shift in the political landscape, as AI Steve plans to engage with voters through online platforms and shape policies based on their input.

Entrepreneur Steve Endacott created AI Steve so that the people of Brighton and Hove could offer opinions and make policies at any time, 24 hours a day.  Steve will stand as an independent candidate on the ballot paper, making him the first-ever artificial intelligence candidate to run for Parliament in the UK.

This technology empowers the chatbot to engage with constituents independently, without the need for Endicott's intervention. It has been lauded for its potential to transform democracy by reinstating direct communication between voters and MPs. In fact, one voter has already expressed gratitude to this personified computer system (the chatbot) for swiftly generating a policy on bin collection during their conversation.

Endacott is clear that his creation, AI Steve, is not designed to replace human parliamentarians, but rather to serve as a tool to enhance their work in representing the people. The chatbot will transcribe and analyse voter conversations, thereby presenting 'validators,' who are ordinary people empowered to rate the importance of issues and propose desired policies.

Some of AI Steve's policy concepts encompass zero VAT on private school fees, reducing University fees by 50%, increasing affordable housing, and introducing a four-day working week by 2030. The creator devised these ideas, which he would enforce if he won with AI Steve.

However, this does not mean that everyone agrees with using AI and ML in politics since some people do not feel comfortable with machines running the affairs of states, raising concerns over how governments are doing about it. In contrast, Endacott envisages AI Steve as an instrument through which politicians can become closer to their electorates and, consequently, more democratic.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed that using AI to seek opinions from electorates doesn't contravene any electoral laws. AI Steve's candidacy has provoked a heated debate about technology's role in politics and how AI could enhance democracy.

The UK general election is scheduled for July 4th, and AI Steve's bid for office is expected to generate huge interest. It's unclear if AI Steve can become the first robot MP; however, it represents a significant political shift for the Brits.
