After years of waking up with a bad back, I finally swapped my old mattress for a Simba Hybrid – and the difference was obvious from night one.

I’ve been sleeping pretty much every night for the best part of six decades, so I’d like to think I’ve picked up a thing or two along the way. Not in a lab, not with pressure sensors or spreadsheets, just in the real world – bad backs, restless nights and the occasional 3am stare at the ceiling wondering what went wrong.

For years, I was in what can only be described as a long-term, slightly toxic relationship with my old mattress. It wasn’t terrible, but it definitely wasn’t helping. I’d wake up with that familiar, low-level ache in my back and just sort of accept it as part of getting older.

Eventually it dawned on me that it might not be age. It might be the mattress quietly giving up.

So I replaced it with a Simba Hybrid – partly because I needed a change, and partly because the timing made the decision easier than it probably should have been.

Right now, Simba is running one of those offers that’s hard to ignore. You’re not just getting the mattress – there are free pillows, a duvet and mattress protectors bundled in with selected models, plus a pair of reflexology-inspired slippers thrown in if you use the code LINKBY-SLIPPERS. It runs until 29 March, and it’s very clearly designed to nudge people like me off the fence - which, in my case, worked. To find out more, click here.

Unboxing it felt faintly ridiculous, if I’m honest. A full-sized mattress arriving rolled up in a box still doesn’t feel entirely natural. But once it was out and had expanded, it looked the part – well made, solid, and reassuringly mattress-shaped, which is always a good start.

The real test, though, was the first few nights.

And that’s where things shifted quite quickly.

From night one, it felt different in a way that’s hard to fake. Not softer, not harder – just properly supportive. The kind of support where you suddenly realise your body isn’t compensating for anything. Lying on my back, on my side, it all just felt… straight.

Products tested

Simba Hybrid Mattress: I tested the Simba Hybrid Mattress, available direct from Simba for £899 (king size). It combines five layers of comfort, including Aerocoil® micro springs and cooling technology, for exceptional support and temperature regulation.

Simba Hybrid Pillow: I was so impressed with the mattress that I decided to upgrade my pillow game as well. The Simba Hybrid Pillow (£109) features adjustable Nanocube® filling, temperature regulation, and a breathable design, making it customisable for different sleep positions.

Simba Hybrid Duvet: To complete the full Simba sleep experience, I also invested in the Simba Hybrid Duvet (£139). It’s designed with Stratos® temperature control, helping to maintain an ideal sleeping climate throughout the night.

Together, these have elevated our slumbers to boss level—turning our bed into the kind of luxurious retreat you normally only find in high-end hotels.

Which, it turns out, had not been the case before.

My old mattress hadn’t collapsed dramatically. It had just sagged very slightly, very gradually, in exactly the wrong places. Enough to throw things off without me really noticing until it became the norm.

The Simba fixed that almost immediately.

Even sitting up in bed – reading, drinking coffee, attempting to put socks on without pulling something – felt easier. It holds its shape in a way my old one simply didn’t.

Then there’s the motion isolation, which sounds like marketing jargon until you notice it working. I had a heavy cold in the first week, so there was a fair amount of shifting around, coughing and general disruption. Somehow, most of that didn’t translate across the bed.

My wife still heard the coughing, unfortunately. But at least she wasn’t being launched sideways every time I moved.

In terms of what’s actually going on inside it, the Simba Hybrid is built in layers – foam, micro springs, more foam – all designed to keep things supportive without turning the bed into a heat trap.

And crucially, it doesn’t overheat. That alone puts it ahead of some memory foam mattresses I’ve tried in the past, which tend to feel fine in winter and then slightly unbearable the moment the temperature creeps up.

Edge support is also solid, which you only really appreciate when it’s not there. No sliding off the side, no collapsing corners, just a consistent feel across the whole surface.

Other Simba mattresses: what’s the difference?

If you’re considering a Simba mattress but aren’t sure which one to go for, here’s how the range compares:

Simba Hybrid Essential (£699, king size) – The entry-level option, offering Simba’s hybrid design at a lower price point, with fewer layers but still including Aerocoil® micro springs for support.

Simba Hybrid Pro (£1,259, king size) – Adds a wool comfort layer for extra breathability and a more plush feel while keeping the same hybrid support.

Simba Hybrid Luxe (£1,799, king size) – More layers, including an extra set of Aerocoil® springs and enhanced breathability, for an even more luxurious sleep experience.

Simba Hybrid Ultra (£2,999, king size) – The top-of-the-line model, featuring a triple-layer spring system, even more cooling tech, and maximum support—essentially, the Rolls-Royce of Simba mattresses.

They also give you 200 nights to try it, which is a polite way of saying you’ve got plenty of time to decide if you’ve made a mistake.

So, is it the best mattress in the world? I’ve no idea, and I’m not about to start hauling dozens of them up and down the stairs to find out.

But is it the best one I’ve slept on? Very possibly.

It’s certainly the best one I’ve owned, and more to the point, it’s made a noticeable difference. I’m sleeping more comfortably, waking up without that familiar list of minor complaints, and generally feeling like I’ve fixed something that had been slightly off for years.

The main lesson, if there is one, is that you get used to things not quite being right. Especially when it comes to sleep.

You adapt, you work around it, and before long it just feels normal.

Until you change it and realise it didn’t have to be like that in the first place.
