Falcon Flyerz, a network of Hockey sessions run in Weybridge, Guildford and Epsom, specifically help children with disabilities to get active with their families in an inclusive, outdoor environment.

One person who has benefitted from the programme is 15 year-old Will. Will who is autistic, joined the programme four years ago. His mum, Lisa, explained: “I heard about Flyerz and it was amazing!

“I just don’t know how they manage to make it as inclusive as they do, there are kids with wheelchairs, sight impairments and children who struggle with noise. It is a real mixed bag but the sessions allow the kids to dip in and out as and when they need to.”

Being outside is something that Stratford thinks is really important, she added: “Being outdoors is the one thing every parent wants their teenage kids to do on a Sunday morning and within 10 minutes of the session starting he is in a good mood, it literally changes him!

“We all know how good exercise being outside is for you.”

Falcon Flyerz sessions are giving Will the chance to get involved in sports where before he may not have been able to take as much of an active part and his mum explained: “Will has Autism and that just means he will sometimes be working at a different pace and on some days things go great and others things don’t go so great.

“Flyerz allows Will to be ‘Good day Will’ or ‘Bad day Will’ whatever it was and just turn up.

“They accept him as who he is, if he is having a bad day they will carry on and if he walks off he can then re-join the group later in the session.”

The inclusivity of the sessions are just one of the many benefits that Lisa has seen in Will, she said: “He has come on so much since he joined in 2019. His school have noticed improvements in his hand-eye coordination and I have noticed his writing is better. I think all of these things are related to Flyerz because he is physically fitter and he wants to do exercise.

“He wanted to join the gym because he wanted to be able to run as fast as one of the guys who helps out at the sessions and there are so many different elements that are motivating him because of the things he does at Flyerz.

“It is good for his mental health, his physical health and his confidence.”
