Village pub on West Sussex / Surrey border at risk of closure

A village pub near Gatwick Airport is at risk of closure.

A period of staff consultation is underway at the Shipley Bridge in Antlands Lane East, Burstow, as a ‘potential closure is considered’, brewing company Greene King confirmed.

No final decision has been made, while the team member consultation remains ongoing at the village pub, in the Tandridge district of Surrey.

A spokesperson for Greene King said: “We can confirm that a consultation is underway at the Shipley Bridge as a potential closure is considered. Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one and multiple factors are always considered before a final outcome is agreed.

“The team at the Shipley Bridge has been notified, and our main focus is on supporting our team members at this time.”

The Chef & Brewer pub remains open and trading while a team member consultation takes place.

The Shipley Bridge is described on its website as a ‘warm and welcoming country-style pub’, which is ‘just minutes from London Gatwick Airport’.

The website adds: “Perfect for a pre or post-flight bite to eat, this charming pub promises excellent food, unbeatable facilities and an atmosphere guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

"From hearty pies and steaks to classic Sunday roasts and an impressive range of drinks, there's something for every occasion, palate, and preference. Curl up by the fireplace with a glass of something special, or unwind in the beer garden and enjoy a spot of peace and quiet.

"With free Wi-Fi, disabled facilities, and a dog-friendly attitude, you can enjoy a stress-free experience and focus on the more important things – bonding with your loved ones over lovingly cooked food.”
