Petworth residents asked for views on average speed cameras
Residents have been asked for their views on whether average speed cameras should be installed on sections of the A283 and A272 in West Sussex.
Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne is leading the consultation.
Average speed cameras measure the speed vehicles are travelling over a long stretch of road – rather than at a single spot.
Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), they record the entry and exit time between at least two cameras to calculate the average speed.

If this average exceeds the limit, drivers are fined.
Mrs Bourne said: “Local people have been contacting my office about speeding, dangerous driving and vehicle noise on the A283 between Halnaker and Duncton and the A272 between Petworth and Midhurst.
"They want to know what can be done to slow cars down and some have suggested average speed cameras which have been proven to work in other parts of Sussex and across the border in Surrey.
“If you live around these roads or use them, I’d like to hear your thoughts on measures to make them safer.”
The results of this survey will then inform the PCC’s decision on ‘whether to pursue working with relevant authorities to get cameras installed’.
