'We will stand up for Spelthorne' - Council leader outlines goals for 2026 in New Year message

Joanne Sexton has outlined Spelthorne Borough Council’s goals for 2026 in a New Year message to residents.

The leader has promised progress on anti-social behaviour, HMOs and making sure people feel proud of where they live.

It has been a busy year for Cllr Sexton with allegations of bullying (cleared), a pen-pushing battle with the Home Office over asylum hotels, managing the council’s finances with commissioner and of course local government reorganisation.

But, with the final ‘proper’ year of Spelthorne as an independent council, 2026 could be the biggest year yet.

The leader wrote: “As 2025 draws to a close, I am proud of what we have achieved together in Spelthorne.

“Time and again, our residents, volunteers, community groups and businesses have shown the true strength of our borough.

“That shared spirit is our greatest asset and by continuing to work together, we can build an even better place to live, work and raise families.

“We remain focused on the issues that matter most to residents. Tackling antisocial behaviour, from graffiti and vandalism to littering and dog fouling, is vital to protecting pride in our neighbourhoods.

“In 2026, we will keep working with partners and residents to ensure our streets and open spaces are clean, safe and welcoming.

“We are also determined to improve standards in poorly managed Houses in Multiple Occupation, protecting both residents and the character of our communities.

“Looking ahead, 2026 will also be a year of preparation as we engage with the future of the local government in Surrey.

“We will stand up for Spelthorne and make sure our voice is heard.

“On behalf of the Council, I wish everyone in Spelthorne a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.”
