Surrey train delays explained after trains could not run on key route

Trains could not run on a key route in Surrey this morning (Saturday, January 11).

Southern Rail reported at 6.40am that it had been ‘made aware of a points failure’ between Sutton and Epsom.

"At this time, no trains can run from Sutton towards Epsom, meaning the line towards Victoria, is blocked,” a social media notice read.

"If you are travelling on the route from London Victoria to Dorking or from London Bridge to Epsom, your journey may be delayed up to 30 minutes in the Sutton area.

“We advise you to leave extra time to travel and check your journey before you leave.”

At 7.30am, Southern Rail said trains were ‘currently unable to run’ between Sutton and Dorking.

All trains were ‘stopping or starting’ at Sutton or were being ‘cancelled in full’.

Southern Rail added: “If you are travelling between Epsom and Surrey, you can use your ticket, at no extra cost, on TfL buses.

“Tfl buses between Epsom and Sutton (prepay number 176).”

The points failure had been fixed by 7.35am.

Southern Rail said services would ‘shortly be returning to normal’ with the ‘exception of some minor delays’ to trains already in service.

Disruption came to an end by 8.15am.
