Horley Hackers through to Slam quarter-finals

Horley Hackers made it through to the quarter-finals of the Sussex Slam T20 with a massive 69-run win against Southwater.

Horley elected to bat and made a fast start against a young opposition side that was weakened by lack of availability. Guy Derham and Adam Stephenson took 12 off the first over then Stephenson hit ten off the first two balls of the second over but was out next ball, caught by Sean Overton off Phil Hatzidakis.

Derham and Ryan Bunn took the score on to 70 before Josh Harding bowled Derham for 17 in the seventh over, but Bunn and Ben Remfry continued to take the game to Southwater, bringing the 100 up in the tenth over.

Bunn retired on 50 in the 12th over (28 balls, seven fours, two sixes) and Regan Derham only lasted five balls before he played on, trying to sweep the slowest of slow deliveries from Gary Moore.

Then the forecast rain began to fall at Horley Row, but both teams were determined to get the match played, so they resumed as soon as possible, reducing the game to 13 overs a side. Horley’s innings was immediately closed on 139-3 and Southwater were set a DLS target of 148 to win.

They made a strong start, taking 29 off the first 2.4 overs before Morgan Gilmore was run out by Guy Derham's throw in to brother Regan for 10.

In the next two overs Sam Remfry bowled Jacob Willmer for 19 then Regan Derham stumped Hatzidakis off Spalding and Southwater were 35-3.

Alex Field bowled the skipper Overton in the eighth over and at the ten-over mark Southwater were 63-4.

In the 11th over, Irfaan Baksh took two wickets, both stumped by Regan Derham, and conceded just one run to make it 64-6 and Southwater were only able to limp on to 78-6 by the close.
