Surrey home care provider unveils charity book to help children discover the joy of caring for grandparents
A new children’s book has officially launched this week aiming to bring families closer together this Christmas by inspiring little ones to look after their older relatives – with all proceeds from the book going to a dementia charity.
‘Granny’s Coming To Ours For Christmas’ is a heartwarming festive story with a charitable purpose. It encourages children to take small, thoughtful actions to ensure grandparents feel cherished and included during the celebrations.

The project is a personal collaboration between former nurse Louise Blezzard and 22-year-old art student Chloe Hills-Lowbridge, with the pair officially unveiling the book yesterday evening (11th December) at a gathering at the Maddox Gallery in London.
Around 60 guests attended the event, including care sector colleagues and friends connected to Venelle, the home care provider founded by Louise, which has funded the project, and which operates throughout Surrey.

The launch comes at a vital time. Research from Age UK highlights that Christmas is often the hardest time of year for older people, with 1.4 million admitting to feeling cut off from society. With more than 900,000 people in the UK also currently living with dementia, the need for inclusive, safe and supportive family environments has never been greater.
All proceeds of the book will be going to Resonate Arts, the Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea organisation who support people living with dementia.
For illustrator Chloe, a student at Falmouth University, the commission was a deeply personal tribute. She lost her own grandmother last year and used those memories to shape the artwork.
“I took inspiration from my own granny, capturing her clothes, her kindness and even her smile,” says Chloe. “This project celebrates the special bond between generations. I hope it gets children excited about showing compassion and consideration for their grandparents this Christmas.”

The story features Dolly the dachshund - Louise’s real-life dog and "Chief Happiness Officer" - who guides young readers through the preparations for Granny’s visit. Through the eyes of the lovable dog, children learn how to make a home comfortable and welcoming for older guests, particularly those who may be living with dementia or mobility challenges.
Louise Blezzard created the book to turn the potential chaos of a family Christmas into an opportunity for connection. Speaking at the unveiling, she said:
“It is wonderful to see people come together to support this message, because ultimately, Christmas is about belonging. Family homes can be busy places when everyone comes together, but care need not be complicated. It is simply about being thoughtful. This book helps children understand how small acts of kindness can make a significant difference to a grandparent’s sense of inclusion.”
Every copy sold raises funds for Resonate Arts, an organisation that uses creativity to help people living with dementia remain connected to their community. Sam Curtis, Director of Resonate Arts, commenting on the book, said: “This project combines imagination with practical support to highlight the importance of keeping older people connected to the family life they cherish. We are proud to be the charity partner for such a wonderful initiative.”

The book also includes a guide for families on how to create a relaxing environment for older visitors. Suggestions include:
- Clear pathways and driveways - especially if icy
- Provide a sturdy chair by the door for shoes and resting
- Keep stairs and hallways brightly lit, with night lights in darker areas
- Ensure walking aids and glasses stay close at hand
- Offer a ground-floor room if stairs are difficult
- Keep essentials nearby: phone, water, tissues, medication
- Provide non-alcoholic drink options - dehydration is common in winter
- Create a quiet corner for when excitement becomes overwhelming
- Ask grandparents to share festive traditions, stories and songs - involvement brings joy
Louise added: “Homes should feel safe, uplifting and full of togetherness - especially at Christmas. With a few caring touches, every generation can enjoy the magic.”
